Empowering purpose-driven and self-organised teams
Module 0: Intention Setting & Joint Commitment
The first workshop will focus on onboarding the core team members, getting to know each other, and clarifying the expectations, practicalities and intentions for the Journey. The focus for the core team members will be on understanding the status quo in their team, clarifying roles and expectations for the Journey, and creating commitment within their team to ensure the program has lasting and meaningful impact.
Module 1: Self-Organisation in (Daily) Action
Module 1 introduces the core principles of self-organisation and aims to create a shared and holistic understanding of what it encompasses. We introduce Scrumban as an agile method for organising daily work, including dailys, weeklys and sprint planning, dailys. We also focus on forming the foundations for a healthy team culture and developing a shared understanding of the kind of culture and work environment the team wants to create.
Module 2: Creating Supportive Organisational Structures
Module 2 introduces a circular approach to creating a self-organised organisational structure. This involves four levels: purpose, governance, internal value creation and external value creation. At each level, areas of work are organised into roles, which form circles, lead by circle leads. Practical examples of how this works are given and teams are supported to create structures which serve their own organisation. We also explore the role of a shared purpose in a self-organised team and organisation.
Module 3: Leadership in Self-Organisation
Module 3 dives into the role of leadership in a self-organised team. Good leadership is crucial in self-organisation. With greater levels of flexibility, decentralised decision-making and empowerment in a team comes a greater need for personal responsibility and accountability. It also requires a different kind of leadership to the command and control of traditional hierarchical systems. The focus is on creating a shared understanding of what leadership means for the team and for each individual in their own role.
Module 4: Empowered Decision-Making
Module 4 is about making decisions: one of the core elements which enables innovation and empowerment in a self-organised team. We introduce a number of different decision making tools which can be used in different contexts. The focus is on creating a delegation board for the team which defines who can take which kind of decision and using which kind of decision making tool. We also explore some of the obstacles and opportunities related to decentralising decision making.
Module 5: Reflecting, Learning and Innovating
Module 5 focuses on a key capacity for self-organised teams to develop, adapt and innovate: reflecting and learning. We use retrospectives to reflect on the process of the Journey so far, and for the teams to reflect on what has been working well and not in their process of implementation. We also introduce feedforward as a method to capture the things that have been working well which teams want to take forward in their work together.
Module 6: Our Shared Purpose & Vision
Module 6 focuses on developing shared values, vision and purpose for the team, integrating the teams’ processes and work from the Journey. It dives deeper into the role of a shared purpose at the centre of a self-organised team, and guides teams to define and refine their purpose. This includes exploring the highest potential for the team and clarifying which directions the team does not want to go into. It also introduces north stars as a tool for goal setting in uncertain contexts. Teams are also guided to set their next steps for after the Journey, to support them in creating their vision.
