Last year, our team worked in collaboration with the Federal City of Bonn to map and visualise the local sustainability ecosystem. Now you can access the report Forum Zukunft & Netzwerke für lokale Nachhaltigkeit (Bericht) containing the key aspects and learnings of the experience.
In June 2019, the City of Bonn organised a Markt der Möglichkeiten (“Market of Opportunities”) to bring together all the actors and initiatives from the Forum Zukunft – Lokale Agenda Bonn (“Forum Future – Local Agenda Bonn”). This is a discussion forum hosted by the Federal City of Bonn which aims to provide a platform for citizens to network and exchange around the local implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It comprises around 40 local initiatives and organisations, all of them committed to sustainability and equality.
The different initiatives were invited to actively participate in the social network mapping conducted by Unity Effect, which was displayed during the “Markt der Möglichkeiten”. A total of 18 organisations provided key information about the SDGs they are engaged with, the geographical areas in which they are active, as well as their target groups.
The map showed, for example, interesting clusters around topics such as “Climate & Mobility” and “Education, Equality and global justice”. Identifying which are the most popular topics and SDGs among the initiatives also provided a framework to explore future possibilities for joint actions.
This was the first time our Network Visualisation team conducted a social network mapping based on information provided by organisations and not only by individuals. This approach allowed a deeper understanding of the local sustainability ecosystem as a whole, revealing particular dynamics, patterns and relationships which would otherwise be hidden. For the organisations, this kind of map enables them to connect with other initiatives, at the same time as providing a dynamic platform to display information about their individual initiatives and topics.
